LB Semicon, a semiconductor back-end processing (OSAT) specialist, said on April 27 it has started mass production of Renesas power semiconductors. The move is part of its strategy to shift its portfolio away from a business structure centred on display driver ICs (DDI) toward non-DDI and power semiconductors. LB Semicon plans to build a mid- to long-term growth base by securing a global customer base in the segment.

Renesas Electronics, a Japanese integrated semiconductor company, has global competitiveness in automotive and industrial semiconductors. It generates annual revenue of more than 1 trillion yen, or about 9 trillion won. Centring on power semiconductor product lines such as IGBTs, MOSFETs and PMICs, it is expanding across high-growth industries including electric vehicles (EV), advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), industrial power control and the Internet of Things (IoT).

LB Semicon said it secured the mass production reference by meeting the reliability and quality standards required in the power semiconductor market. The company has strengthened its ability to respond to the power semiconductor market based on high-reliability testing and packaging technology. With demand for power semiconductors rising rapidly amid the spread of AI, electric vehicles, data centres and renewable energy, it plans to establish a foundation to get ahead in the market.

As long-term reliability and quality stability serve as barriers to entry for power semiconductors, early mass production references directly lead to subsequent customer expansion. The Renesas mass production case is an example of LB Semicon's back-end processing technology being verified by a global customer and is expected to become a foothold for expanding power semiconductor back-end processing orders.

An LB Semicon official said, "We are continuing our transition away from a DDI-centred business structure toward high value-added semiconductor areas, including power semiconductors." The official said, "Based on the Renesas mass production reference, we will gradually expand our position in the power semiconductor back-end processing market."
