Google has released a free offline AI dictation app for iOS called "Google AI Edge Eloquent", TechCrunch reported on Sunday.

It will also compete with AI transcription apps such as Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Willow.

Google AI Edge Eloquent uses a Gemma-based automatic speech recognition model, allowing users to dictate directly on an iPhone. The transcription appears on screen in real time. When users hit pause, it filters out filler sounds such as "um" and refines the sentences.

Below the transcript are conversion options such as "Key points", "Formal", "Shorter" and "Longer", allowing users to summarise the same content or change the style and length.

Turning off cloud mode uses only on-device processing. Turning on cloud mode uses the Gemini model in the text-polishing step. It can also pull keywords, names and technical terms from Gmail. Users can add words directly.

The app saves transcription session history and supports search. It also shows the previous session's words, words per minute and the total number of spoken words.
