South Korea's KOSPI index surged more than 5 percent on Tuesday to break above the 5,900 level. The Kosdaq index also rose more than 2 percent. A program buying sidecar was triggered on the KOSPI for the first time in six trading sessions.
The KOSPI ended up 284.55 points, or 5.04 percent, at 5,925.03. It opened at 5,767.10, up 126.62 points, or 2.24 percent, and extended gains rapidly in afternoon trade.
A program buying sidecar on the main board was triggered at 2:34:13 p.m.
By investor type, institutions and foreign investors were net buyers of 3.1090 trillion won and 877.8 billion won, respectively. Retail investors were net sellers of 3.8687 trillion won.
Most large-cap stocks gained. Samsung Electronics rose 7.53 percent to 208,500 won, while SK Hynix climbed 8.87 percent to 1,056,000 won.
Hyundai Motor rose 4.41 percent, LG Energy Solution gained 0.79 percent, SK Square advanced 7.33 percent, Samsung Biologics added 2.46 percent, Doosan Enerbility rose 2.78 percent and Kia gained 4.66 percent. Hanwha Aerospace fell 0.43 percent.
The Kosdaq ended up 27.44 points, or 2.41 percent, at 1,164.38.
In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won was trading at 1,484.90 per dollar, up 3.10 won, or 0.21 percent, from the previous session.
