[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] Google is improving its interface to show original links more clearly in its AI search feature, The Verge reported on Feb. 18 (local time).

Google will highlight source links in AI Mode and AI Overviews and expand the change across desktop and mobile.

AI Mode previously provided only information summaries. With the update, a popup will appear when a user hovers over a link, including a related article description and an image. Google plans to ease criticism that AI search reduces web traffic and to help users access original content more easily.

Google has acknowledged AI search's impact on news and website traffic, while also showing the stance that it is an inevitable change. Last year, the European Commission launched an investigation into allegations that Google used digital content without authorisation in AI responses. Google later said it added link features in AI Mode and is reviewing an option for content providers to be excluded from AI search.
