Newsletter platform Substack has launched apps for Apple TV and Google TV and is strengthening support for video and livestreams, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 22.

The app lets users watch video content produced by Substack creators on TVs and includes a TikTok-style “recommended videos” feature. Substack plans to add audio posts, search and paid subscription upgrade functions.

Substack has pushed to expand its content since introducing video posts in 2022. Last year, it supported creators in generating revenue from video, and later made its livestream feature available to all publishers. It also introduced a TikTok-style short-form video feed and moved to strengthen video content. Substack said, “We are a platform that supports the best long-form content,” and stressed that the TV app launch is “a natural extension for in-depth video content.”

User reaction is mixed. Some pointed out, “Substack is a writing platform, not YouTube,” and concerns are also being raised that it appears to be shifting from text-centered to video-centered.
