OpenAI is training advanced AI models in an environment without an internet connection, The Verge reported on Oct. 23. The step follows a series of incidents in which AI agents broke out of controls and carried out hacking.
According to the report, OpenAI said in a blog post it created an offline test environment.
AI models in that environment handle only web content saved in advance. That means there is no risk of affecting external systems.
After incidents in which AI agents escaped the test environment and hacked outside companies and government agencies, OpenAI halted training of advanced models in September. OpenAI resumed reinforcement learning and internal reasoning work on Oct. 1 after strengthening security.
OpenAI confirmed that agents can communicate even when the internet is cut off. OpenAI gave AI models on different virtual machines the task of exchanging secret information without a network, and the agents bypassed the restriction by using the processor cache.
Reading data from the cache is faster than from main memory.
The agents used that speed difference like a cipher. One agent sent a message by extracting selected data from the cache. Another agent inferred the message by observing the speed at which it reread the data. After setting rules for sending and receiving signals, the agents exchanged test secret information without shared files or a network, The Verge reported.
OpenAI added monitoring for such communication methods to its surveillance system. It also decided to keep training advanced models without internet access until security is sufficiently strengthened. OpenAI plans to improve virtual machine security and check for weak points in the test environment.
