U.S. grocery delivery app Instacart is pursuing a sale, The Information reported on Oct. 23.
The report said Instacart, valued at $12 billion, is reviewing sale options with investment banks. It said Instacart has also held at least early-stage talks with DoorDash and Uber.
Whether a deal will be completed is uncertain. An Uber official said discussions with Uber are not currently under way.
If a 30 to 40 percent premium were applied, as in recent acquisitions of listed technology companies, Instacart's value could be $16 billion to $17 billion. Instacart shares rose 10 percent after the report.
Antitrust review is an obstacle. DoorDash and Uber also operate grocery delivery businesses. The Information said antitrust authorities under the Trump administration have more often approved acquisitions with conditions such as the divestment of some businesses, and combinations between directly competing companies must still be investigated.
Instacart also discussed a sale with DoorDash in 2021. The purchase price discussed at the time was $40 billion to $50 billion. The talks fell through because antitrust approval was uncertain under the Biden administration.
Instacart grew rapidly during the COVID-19 period, but growth slowed as the pandemic ended, and it listed in 2023 at a valuation of $10 billion. Its shares have risen 70 percent from the IPO price.
Since listing, growth has lagged rivals. It also moved into advertising, but revenue growth fell to 11 percent in 2024 and 2025 from 19 percent in 2023.
