Apple is considering enlarging the display and adding a telephoto camera to a future iPhone Duo, a report said.

On Oct. 22, IT outlet 9to5Mac reported that Mark Gurman said on the "Power On" podcast that Apple is preparing a plan to increase the screen size for the next iPhone Duo follow-up model.

The core of the report is a third-generation iPhone Duo concept. The iPhone Duo has not yet begun retail sales, but Apple is already reviewing the design direction for follow-up models, the report said. Gurman mentioned that a third-generation model targeting 2028 would be "slightly larger" than the current version.

The current iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch foldable display. It has been suggested that Apple could apply to the foldable model the trend of gradually increasing screen sizes in the iPhone Pro lineup in recent years. Gurman explained that the change points in a similar direction to the increase from the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 6.7 inches to the iPhone 16 Pro Max's 6.9 inches.

The next model also appears to be considering changes to the camera setup. Asked whether a future iPhone Duo could include a telephoto camera, Gurman said, "That's on Apple's list." He did not give a definitive answer on timing, saying, "I don't know when it will come."

The key issue is not component prices but hardware structure. He cited physical constraints, not cost, as the reason a telephoto camera is difficult to include. Gurman said, "It's a pure physics problem related to the required depth," adding that it would be interesting to see how Apple solves it. With foldable devices facing tight limits on internal space and thickness, balancing stronger camera performance with device design remains an important task.

Apple is also testing putting Face ID under the external display and adding an action button in the second-generation iPhone Duo, the report said. If a larger display in the third-generation model is a mid- to long-term design plan, the second-generation model appears focused on improving usability.

Apple's foldable iPhone strategy is still at an early stage. The fact that screen size, biometric authentication and camera configuration for follow-up models are being discussed before an official launch shows Apple is setting a separate evolution path from the regular iPhone. If a telephoto camera is actually adopted, the foldable iPhone's shooting competitiveness could expand by another step.

Still, what has been disclosed so far remains at the level of information about Apple reviews or tests. Which specifications will be reflected in an actual product could change in the development process. Attention is focused on how Apple will solve the two tasks of a bigger screen and a stronger camera while maintaining thickness constraints inherent in a foldable design.
