With U.S. stocks looking to rebound, bitcoin retested resistance at $84,000.

On Oct. 13 (local time), Cointelegraph reported bitcoin rose to around $83,800 near the U.S. stock market open, holding on to gains from the previous night.

Weakness in futures continued until before the U.S. market open. Semiconductor stocks led declines, and the market was wary of the burden of artificial intelligence (AI) investment and intensifying competition from China.

Still, U.S. stocks quickly pared early losses. The S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite briefly turned higher, but both later stayed down less than 0.5 percent. The shock across risk assets did not broaden, but bitcoin also failed to produce a clear breakout move.

Sell-side liquidity above $84,000 remained resistance. Based on CoinGlass data, liquidity around exchange order books was concentrated at that price area, limiting bitcoin's upside. As a result, the price stayed slightly higher but remained trapped in a narrow range.

The macro environment continues to weigh on the crypto market. Reuters reported Wilson Asset Management portfolio strategist Damien Boey said bond volatility matters more than rising Treasury yields themselves. He saw bond volatility beginning to be reflected in asset pricing, putting pressure on risk assets including stocks and cryptocurrencies.

Darkfost, an analyst at on-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant, also said bitcoin bulls faced a double macro burden. He said U.S. Treasury yields were hovering near highs seen about 25 years ago, while a stronger dollar added to the pressure. The dollar index (DXY) has risen 5.5 percent since Sept. 9 and climbed to 102.57 on the day, the highest level since April 2025.

Weaker risk appetite across markets is weighing on cryptocurrencies. Darkfost saw these factors constraining liquidity supplied to the market and weakening institutional investors' confidence, making them reluctant to take on additional risk.

In this situation, the next key market variables are likely to be U.S. macro data and whether risk-asset sentiment recovers. Bitcoin has defended the $83,000 range in the short term, but if it cannot absorb resistance above $84,000, rangebound trading could continue. If overhead liquidity clears, price direction could come under renewed test.
