Coinbase has launched an ultra-short-term price prediction market for U.S. users covering 10 cryptocurrencies including bitcoin and ether.
On Oct. 6 (local time), blockchain outlet The Defiant reported that Coinbase introduced contracts that let users predict whether a price will rise or fall above a specific level over 15-minute or 1-hour intervals.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong (Brian Armstrong) announced the prediction market launch at 4:36 p.m. ET and wrote, "Launching new prediction markets." Users can choose a specific cryptocurrency, a time window and the price direction. The 15-minute market settles and relists repeatedly throughout the day, while event markets with a set date settle once.
The 10 crypto assets are bitcoin, ethereum, solana, ripple (XRP), dogecoin, BNB, shiba inu, zcash, near and Hyperliquid (HYPE). Coinbase's prediction market has four types: 15-minute, hourly, premarket and date-set markets. Short-term contracts settle in a yes-or-no format based on a single reference price and an expiry time.
Longer-term markets are based on price ranges. For example, the 'bitcoin price at end-2026' market is divided into price bands in $5,000 increments, and trading volume reached $77.2 million. Contracts can be bought only with settled dollars and USDC.
Coinbase's prediction market is operated by Kalshi, an exchange regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Coinbase Financial Markets provides the contracts as a registered futures commission merchant and a member of the National Futures Association (NFA). The products are available to residents across the United States except Nevada.
Kalshi offers bitcoin, ethereum, solana, zcash, XRP, near, HYPE, dogecoin and BNB in its own 15-minute crypto market, and Coinbase added shiba inu. Coinbase did not separately disclose the fee structure for the products and said users can check fee details on a confirmation screen before placing an order.
In January, Coinbase teamed up with Kalshi to launch a nationwide prediction market covering sports, politics, the economy and weather. This time, Coinbase expanded the prediction market area to crypto assets, allowing Coinbase users to trade on the same screen as existing spot trading.
Meanwhile, Coinbase shares closed on Oct. 6 at $185.74, down 1.32 percent from the previous session. In after-hours trading following Armstrong's post about the launch, the stock rose 0.38 percent to $186.44.
