[DigitalToday reporter Yoonseo Lee] XRP recorded a higher gain than bitcoin during a recovery phase in the cryptocurrency market last August.
On the 21st (local time), blockchain outlet The Crypto Basic reported that, based on CoinMarketCap data, XRP rose about 30 percent to $1.3790 on Aug. 31 from $1.0605 on July 31. Over the same period, bitcoin rose about 25.1 percent to $78,548.63 from $62,813.75. That put XRP's gain at around 5 percentage points higher based on end-of-month prices.
The gap was more pronounced during the late-August rebound. Based on daily closing prices, XRP jumped about 37.8 percent to $1.5222 on Aug. 23 from $1.1044 on Aug. 19. Over the same period, bitcoin rose about 12.3 percent to $77,755.26 from $69,266.19. In that stretch, XRP's gain was about 3.1 times bitcoin's.
The gap widened in earnest starting on Aug. 20. XRP rose as high as $1.2684 at one point that day, posting a 24-hour gain of 14.85 percent and a 7-day gain of 25.82 percent. Bitcoin, by contrast, rose to $73,032.76, with a 24-hour gain of 5.44 percent and a 7-day gain of 15.19 percent.
On the 21st, XRP reached $1.4538, expanding its 7-day gain to 45.67 percent. At the same time, bitcoin was at $78,335.18, with a 7-day gain of 24.39 percent. The gap in 7-day returns between the two assets widened to about 21.3 percentage points.
On the 23rd, XRP was at $1.5222 and its 7-day gain rose to 53.45 percent. Bitcoin was at $77,755.26, up 23.78 percent over the same period. That increased the gap in 7-day returns to about 29.7 percentage points.
As a result, XRP recorded a higher gain than bitcoin both over the full month of August and during the late-month rebound stretch. The gap in monthly gains was about 5 percentage points, smaller than the difference seen during the short-term rebound. XRP rebounded more strongly during the market recovery, but gave back part of its gains by month-end, narrowing the gap between the two assets.
This trend showed that the strength of a rebound and the ability to sustain gains can differ. Whether XRP will maintain its return advantage will depend on how much of its gains it can hold on to after a strong rebound.
