[Digital Today reporter Jae-won Choi (최재원)] As regulation of privacy-enhancing cryptocurrencies tightens in Europe, Swiss crypto platform SwissBorg has added support for Zcash (ZEC) and Litecoin (LTC).

On Sept. 14 (local time), U.Today reported that SwissBorg cited a sharp increase in user search demand as the reason for the listing. Users can instantly exchange ZEC and LTC for 12 fiat currencies or more than 400 cryptocurrencies. SwissBorg operates its European services through a MiCA-licensed entity in France.

ZEC’s inclusion is drawing particular attention. Unlike Monero, which anonymises all transactions by default, Zcash supports both transparent transactions using public addresses and shielded transactions that conceal information. The outlet explained, "SwissBorg currently handles only transparent addresses to meet existing anti-money laundering and transaction-tracing requirements."

The regulatory environment will change significantly next year. Article 79 of the EU Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) will, from July 10, 2027, bar crypto-asset service providers from operating accounts that anonymise customers or transactions or make them harder to trace. The rule also includes 'anonymity-enhanced coins' among those covered. While it does not name specific coins, substantial constraints are expected for European exchange and custody services for assets with optional privacy features such as ZEC. Holding personal wallets is not prohibited.

The listing also coincided with a sharp rise in ZEC prices. The outlet said ZEC has surged about 45 percent over the past week, topping $1,000 (about 1,347,500 won), as short-covering and expectations for a spot ETF overlapped. It rose to around $1,200 (about 1,617,000 won) on the day.

LTC also supports an optional privacy feature, MWEB. As AMLR defines assets with anonymisation features built in by default or optionally as 'anonymity-enhanced coins', how it will be applied in detail will be key. With about 10 months left until the rules take effect, SwissBorg has effectively expanded trading access for the two assets to reflect user demand.
