[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Anthropic was reported to have posted a job listing for a sales role dedicated to Meta and then deleted it immediately. The complex business relationship between the two companies has drawn renewed attention because Meta, a competitor, is also a key Anthropic customer.

According to Business Insider on Sept. 9 local time, Anthropic’s careers page recently carried a job posting titled “Mega Account Executive, Meta,” which was later removed.

The posting said the role was to win new business and expand revenue with strategic digital-native accounts. It listed a salary range of $380,000 to $450,000. The body text did not name a specific company, but the title explicitly named Meta.

A dedicated sales role targeting Meta is unusual. Anthropic’s other sales job postings often focus on a specific region or industry, but this one put a single large customer, Meta, in the job title.

Anthropic deleted the posting after Business Insider asked about it. The two companies did not issue separate positions on the posting.

The relationship between the two companies is especially complex because the customer and competitor roles overlap. Meta is known as a major customer that uses Anthropic’s AI services at scale, while also competing with Anthropic by developing its own AI models and products.

In particular, Anthropic’s AI coding tool Claude Code has spread rapidly in Silicon Valley this year, and its use inside Meta was also reported to have increased. Meta, meanwhile, has continued efforts to reduce reliance on external AI tools as it strengthens its in-house AI capabilities.

Expectations are also high for the scale of Meta’s spending on Anthropic’s services. Some internal estimates were reported to include projections that Meta could spend as much as $10 billion a year on Anthropic. For Anthropic, revenue from a mega-customer like Meta inevitably plays a crucial role in growth and corporate value.

For this reason, the posting is also interpreted as showing Anthropic’s intent to expand and maintain business with Meta over the long term, beyond simply adding sales staff. Attention is also drawn to the idea that securing stable revenue from large customers could become important as Anthropic prepares for an initial public offering (IPO).

Conversely, the relationship could change if Meta improves the performance of its in-house AI models and reduces dependence on Anthropic. As a customer, it needs to keep using Anthropic’s services, while as a competitor it needs to grow its own AI ecosystem.

Ultimately, the relationship between Anthropic and Meta is an example of the current structure of the AI industry, where companies compete while also needing each other. How long Anthropic can retain and expand revenue from a mega-customer like Meta, and how far Meta can reduce reliance on external AI services, are expected to be key variables shaping their future ties.
