Anthropic’s experimental unit Labs, with about 20 people, is drawing attention as a group that drives product innovation after producing Claude Code, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Claude Design in quick succession.

On Sept. 7 local time, IT outlet Business Insider reported that Labs is an internal startup incubator created in 2024 by Anthropic co-founder Ben Mann (벤 만). It is a rotating organisation without fixed members. The team quickly builds new ideas into prototypes, then decides about every two weeks whether to keep pushing or change direction. Projects without results are discarded or merged into other ideas, while successful projects are spun out into separate teams.

Mann said only 20 to 30 percent of Labs ideas succeed, but successful projects grew far bigger than expected. A key example is Claude Code. After hearing signals from researchers that a new model showed strengths in agent-style coding, he assigned development to Boris Cherny (보리스 체르니). A prototype that became popular inside the company was released as a research preview in February 2025. Claude Code has since become a core product for Anthropic’s growth.

A strength of Labs is the short distance between research and product development. Developers quickly receive updates on model performance improvements and connect them to new products. They also pass challenges found in product development back to researchers. Development of Claude Design increased research interest in improving visual output performance, and Labs also called for improvements to an audio model to enhance Amharic understanding.

Projects usually leave Labs and split into separate organisations when staffing exceeds 4 people. As Anthropic, which is preparing for an initial public offering, rapidly expands its product areas, Labs’ approach of “build fast and throw it away if it fails” is expected to play an important role in the company’s future product strategy.
