South Korea's National Information Society Agency (NIA) said on Sept. 7 it carried out an organisational restructuring to strengthen execution of national AI policy and respond to three mega-projects.
The restructuring focused on strengthening the stability of the government's AI foundation, bolstering support functions for AI transformation (AX), and establishing a response system for three AI mega-projects.
NIA first upgraded the Artificial Intelligence Government Infrastructure Support Unit, which had been responsible for supporting cloud, redundancy and disaster recovery (DR) build-outs, to the Artificial Intelligence Government Infrastructure Headquarters. It also set up an AI Government Projects Team under the AI Government Headquarters to support the introduction of AI services in the public sector and the development and implementation of related national policy tasks.
It also reorganised AX-related units. NIA integrated the Artificial Intelligence Innovation Support Unit into the Artificial Intelligence Convergence Headquarters, bringing dispersed AX support functions into a single organisation. It set up an Agentic AI Innovation Team under the Intelligent Technology Infrastructure Headquarters. The team will support building an agentic AI ecosystem that allows the public to use AI agents.
NIA also strengthened its response to the government's three AI mega-projects. It assigned physical AI data-related functions to the Data Utilisation Technology Team to support securing and using high-quality data in the physical AI field. NIA plans to expand related support systems depending on how government policies progress.
NIA President Hyung-cheol Kim (김형철) said, "This organisational restructuring is intended to support key national AI policies with greater speed." He said, "We will support the government's AI policies so they lead to outcomes the public can feel."
