Bami Tongwi unveils support strategy for location information industry ecosystem
The Broadcasting Media and Communications Commission on Sunday announced a strategy to support the development of the location information industry ecosystem. The plan includes easing rules to allow processed personal location data to be used for AI training and service development without consent, and updating notification methods for third-party provision. It also outlines a startup support centre, upgrades to emergency rescue requests and the introduction of altitude data, and stronger user protections, including higher administrative penalties and stricter sanctions for violations.

BMCT, KISA publish first casebook on key violations of Location Information Act
South Korea\'s Broadcasting Media Communication Commission and the Korea Internet & Security Agency said on Tuesday they have published for the first time a casebook on key violations of the Location Information Act to help location information businesses strengthen compliance. The casebook compiles frequently cited violations from annual inspections into four categories, including registration changes, terms and policies, administrative and technical safeguards, and destruction of personal location information. The commission plans to distribute it at a briefing on March 4.

Broad Media Telecom Commission announces 2026 plan for personal location information service provider registration
South Korea\'s Broad Media Telecom Commission said on Jan. 26 it announced a 2026 plan to review the suitability of registrations for personal location information service providers. Registration reviews will be conducted in four rounds in March, June, September and December, with first-round applications accepted from Feb. 19 to 26. The review covers financial soundness, facilities scale and protection measures, and applicants must be judged suitable in all areas.
