The Broad Media Telecom Commission said on Jan. 26 it announced its “2026 plan to review the suitability of registrations for personal location information service providers.”
Registration reviews will be conducted in four rounds in March, June, September and December. The application period for the first round runs from Feb. 19 to 26. Under relevant laws, anyone seeking to operate a business involving personal location information must register with the commission details such as the company name, key facilities and a plan for location information protection measures.
The suitability review consists of three areas. It evaluates the soundness of the financial structure, the appropriateness of the scale of facilities related to the location information business, and the appropriateness of technical and administrative measures plans related to location information protection. Registration is completed only if an applicant is judged “suitable” in all items.
From this year, an “opinion hearing” procedure will be added to the review process. The commission said the aim is to prevent registration delays and strengthen operators’ security capabilities by giving applicants an opportunity to explain, to address the limits of written reviews.
The commission will hold a “briefing session on how to fill out forms” ahead of each application round. The first session will be held on Jan. 26 via an Onnara video conference, and a detailed pre-briefing session will follow on Jan. 30.
Applicants should file registration requests online through the Electronic Civil Service Center and then submit final review documents to the commission’s Location Information Policy Team in person or by mail. Approval applications for business transfers or corporate mergers and splits can be filed at any time.
