Hackers attack OpenCode AI coding tool open source, charge users\' AI accounts without permission

Hackers attacked the open source of AI coding tool OpenCode and imposed charges on users\' AI accounts without permission, TechCrunch reported. The attackers broke into an older OpenCode system and compromised 1.4 percent of OpenCode Console accounts, where some users stored API keys. OpenCode linked the incident to a large-scale distillation attack. Developers reported unauthorized charges of hundreds of dollars per account, in some cases exceeding $1,000. Anthropic and Google blocked exposed keys, and OpenCode is issuing refunds.

Intel CEO defends China\'s open-weight AI models, calls DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM \'good enough\'

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan (립부 탄) publicly defended Chinese open-weight AI models, naming DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM and calling them “good enough,” Cryptopolitan reported. He said he strongly believes in open source and cited the models’ cost efficiency, adding the market should decide which models fit which tasks. The comments echo Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s stance. U.S. agencies have warned of large-scale distillation work by Chinese firms since late 2024.

OpenAI blocks attempts to extract protected reasoning, cites links to Moonshot AI

OpenAI said it detected and blocked an organised effort to extract non-public reasoning information from its AI models at scale. The activity began on July 1 and surged on July 24-25, when 16,000 requests showing similar extraction patterns came from more than 4,000 users. OpenAI said related activity was confirmed across more than 15,000 users and was blocked by July 28. It described the method as adversarial distillation and said the core group was linked to people related to Chinese startup Moonshot AI.
