PJM to limit power supply to data centres using 50 MW or more
PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. power grid operator, will cut electricity supply to large data centres and other big power users when power is scarce. The step followed a capacity auction aimed at adding new generation that fell short of its target. The restrictions will apply from June 2027 to data centres using 50 megawatts or more. The programme will operate like a demand response scheme and pay compensation to affected customers.

As U.S. electricity demand climbs through 2027, bitcoin mining firms are being tested on whether they can act as flexible loads that reduce consumption when supply is tight, rather than simply large users of power. The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts consumption rising from 4.195 trillion kWh in 2025 to 4.399 trillion kWh in 2027, driven by AI data centres, crypto operations and electrification. Texas grid operator ERCOT runs voluntary curtailment deals, but flexibility can weaken when mining profitability rises.

Google invests in virtual power plant in biggest U.S. grid to secure data centre electricity
Google is backing the construction of a virtual power plant in PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. power grid, to address rising electricity demand from AI data centres. Working with distributed energy platform Voltus, the project will link resources such as electric vehicles, smart thermostats and storage to reduce or shift consumption during peak periods. Google will support build costs, with added capacity used for regional data centre operations. The project targets operation in 2027.
