Mythos emerges as AI-driven mobile app attacks surge
Security firms are publishing early experiences of Anthropic’s AI model Mythos, which was first shared on a limited basis with some companies, with Cloudflare standing out. Cloudflare said Mythos is a tool on a different level from earlier general-purpose frontier models, citing attack-chain building and proof generation. Separately, Anthropic is allowing Mythos users to share cyber threat information with other companies exposed to similar vulnerabilities.

Data breaches exploiting software vulnerabilities surge, overtaking credential theft
Hackers are using AI to find software vulnerabilities, sharply cutting the time defenders have to respond, Verizon said in its annual data breach investigations report. Reuters reported that exploiting software vulnerabilities overtook credential theft as the top cause of breaches for the first time. Verizon said 31 percent of breaches it analyzed began with vulnerability exploitation. The report also flagged employee use of unapproved “shadow AI” as a growing non-malicious insider issue.

Microsoft says 8.3 billion email phishing attacks in Q1, QR code attacks up 146 percent
Microsoft Threat Intelligence published its first-quarter 2026 email threat trends report and said email-based phishing attacks totalled about 8.3 billion. It said 78 percent of all email threats were link-based attacks aimed mainly at stealing credentials. QR code phishing rose 146 percent in the quarter, reaching 18.7 million cases in March, while CAPTCHA-based phishing climbed to about 11.9 million. Business email compromise attacks totalled 10.7 million.
