[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] Cybersecurity company Arctic Wolf has unveiled Decipio, a security tool that detects credential theft early, Techzine reported on April 22.

Decipio is being run as a closed beta and is available only on a limited basis to vetted cybersecurity experts.

The company said credential theft is one of the intrusion paths attackers often use, but early detection has been difficult because theft activity blends into normal network traffic.

Decipio works by laying traps. It sets a fake system that does not exist on a normal network as the destination and sends connection requests. Normal systems ignore them because the destination is unknown. By contrast, an attacker secretly probing the network responds to the request. The moment a response comes in, it is seen as a signal that there is an intruder.

Ismael Valenzuela (이스마엘 발렌수엘라), head of Arctic Wolf Threat Intelligence Research, said, "We should not respond only after an attack has caused damage." He added, "Decipio was designed with a defense-first approach to identify attackers as early as possible."
