Bain Capital says Japanese chipmakers have reasons they cannot keep up with Samsung, SK hynix
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are seen as maintaining a structural competitive edge over Japanese semiconductor companies even in the AI memory era, a Bain Capital executive said. Yuji Sugimoto (스기모토 유지), head of Bain Capital Japan, attributed their strength to chaebol-led top-down leadership and ownership structures that enable swift decisions on large-scale investment. He discussed Kioxia’s turnaround after Bain led a consortium buyout of Toshiba Memory.

SKT forms AI fund with Japan\'s NTT, steps up Korea-Japan economic cooperation
SK Telecom said it will form a joint fund with Japan\'s NTT and Taiwan\'s Chunghwa Telecom to invest in next-generation AI technology. The IOWN AI Fund is expected to be worth $500 million, about 760 billion won. The companies plan to set up fund manager Catalight Capital with bases in Silicon Valley and East Asia. The fund will invest in startups across AI infrastructure, semiconductors, services and optical communications.

Toshiba says quantum-inspired computing algorithm boosts speed 100-fold
Toshiba has unveiled a quantum-inspired computing algorithm that simulates quantum calculations on classical computers, saying it improves speed and accuracy at the same time. The company said the algorithm can run up to 100 times faster than existing methods and achieve near-100 percent accuracy by using the “edge of chaos” concept. It cited a case where runtime fell from about 1.3 seconds to under 0.01 seconds.
