Japan AI latecomer starts counterattack with Nvidia, SoftBank, Microsoft big tech alliance

Japanese companies are expanding cooperation with global big tech to strengthen artificial intelligence competitiveness. Station Ai is running an AI Boost Program with SoftBank and Nvidia to support five startups, offering free access to high-performance GPUs and engineering help. Microsoft plans to invest 1.6 trillion yen in Japan from 2026 to 2029. SoftBank, NEC, Honda and Sony Group will set up a joint venture to develop foundation models, while the government plans 1 trillion yen in support.

Intel shares surge 15 percent after hours on Q1 beat, strong Q2 outlook; data center and foundry sales rise

Intel\'s shares surged 15 percent in after-hours trading after the company posted first-quarter results that beat market expectations and issued a stronger-than-expected second-quarter outlook. Revenue rose 7.2 percent to $13.58 billion, topping forecasts. Data center revenue climbed 22 percent to $5.1 billion and foundry revenue rose 16 percent to $5.4 billion. Intel posted a net loss of $4.28 billion, wider than a year earlier.

SoftBank to exclusively sell Natural AI Phone in Japan

SoftBank has introduced an AI-focused smartphone in Japan, beginning a test of AI-centric devices as it seeks to expand AI experiences in both hardware and services. The company will exclusively sell Brain Technologies\' Android-based Natural AI Phone in Japan for one year from April 24, priced at 93,600 yen, with preorders already open. The phone integrates a Natural AI agent at the operating-system level and includes an AI button. SoftBank also unveiled a generative AI trial web service, DareDemo AI.
