AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness invested $400 million in chip startup Source Foundry. TechCrunch reported on Aug. 9 that Source Foundry was founded by Stanford researchers and aims to make semiconductor manufacturing faster and cheaper. Situational Awareness has continued making large investments despite recent losses. It sold most of its public portfolio to Ken Griffin’s Citadel last month but kept its stake in Anthropic. Assets under management reportedly fell from $20 billion to $10 billion.

Naver hires former defence vice minister Kim Sun-ho to boost defence AI business
Naver has hired former Vice Defence Minister Kim Sun-ho (김선호) as a full-time management adviser, the company’s latest step to strengthen its defence-related AI push. Industry sources said Kim recently completed a post-government employment review and is coordinating his start date with Naver. The move is seen as aimed at applying his experience in defence and government policy to Naver’s public and defence AI transformation and its sovereign AI strategy.

Competition among web browsers is shifting beyond search results toward features that let AI handle tasks inside the browser, TechCrunch reported on Thursday. Perplexity, The Browser Company, Opera and OpenAI have each introduced AI-focused browsers with functions such as summarising emails, researching, shopping and agent modes. Other players include YC-backed Aside, Zetter, privacy-focused Brave and DuckDuckGo, and open-source newcomer Ladybird.
