AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness invested $400 million in chip startup Source Foundry. TechCrunch reported on Aug. 9 that Source Foundry, founded by Stanford researchers, aims to make semiconductor manufacturing faster and cheaper.
Situational Awareness has continued making large investments despite recent losses. The fund sold most of its public portfolio to Ken Griffin’s Citadel last month. It retained its stake in Anthropic. Assets under management are reported to have fallen from $20 billion to $10 billion.
Situational Awareness was founded in 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner (레오폴트 아셴브레너), a former OpenAI researcher. He was in his mid-20s when he launched the fund and had no trading experience. The fund posted strong early returns but has suffered heavy losses in recent months as AI infrastructure stocks fell.
Aschenbrenner drew attention by holding his wedding despite the situation.
