The competitive landscape in browsers is shifting beyond rivalry over search results toward features centred on AI handling tasks inside the browser, TechCrunch reported on Thursday.
Perplexity has launched a chatbot-based search browser called Comet. It performs tasks such as summarising emails, browsing web pages and sending calendar invitations. For now, only subscribers to its $200-a-month Max plan can use it.
Arc browser developer The Browser Company has released Dia, an AI-focused browser. It identifies all websites a user has visited and login information to help with finding information and carrying out tasks. It is operating as an invite-only beta.
Opera has introduced Neon with situational awareness features. It handles tasks such as research, shopping and code writing and works even when offline. The monthly subscription fee is $19.90.
OpenAI has launched an AI browser called Atlas. Users can ask ChatGPT about search results and browse websites. It also has an agent mode that carries out tasks on behalf of users. It launched first on macOS and plans sequential releases for Windows, iOS and Android.
Aside, backed by Y Combinator, is preparing a browser that uses passwords and browsing history to automatically handle tasks across services such as Gmail, Notion, Slack, Figma and banking services.
Zetter launched an AI browser in June with web page Q&A and personalised recommendation features. It is free and also offers a $10-a-month paid subscription.
Privacy-focused browsers include Brave and DuckDuckGo. Brave has ad and tracking blocking features and its own cryptocurrency rewards system. DuckDuckGo recently strengthened its chatbot and scam detection features.
Ladybird, led by GitHub co-founder Chris Wanstrath (크리스 완스트래스), is building an entirely new open-source browser without existing Chromium code. It plans to launch an alpha version on Linux and macOS in 2026.
Opera also introduced a meditation-themed browser called Air in February. It offers break reminders, breathing exercises and binaural beats for focus and relaxation.
