OpenAI acquires AI security startup Promptfoo, to deploy it for AI agent security

OpenAI has acquired AI security startup Promptfoo, accelerating efforts to strengthen large language model security, TechCrunch reported on March 9 local time. The deal terms were not disclosed. OpenAI plans to integrate Promptfoo’s technology into its AI agent platform OpenAI Frontier, enhancing automated security checks, workflow security assessments, risk monitoring and regulatory compliance. Promptfoo, founded in 2024, has raised $23 million and was valued at $86 million as of July 2025.
