OpenAI has acquired AI security startup Promptfoo, speeding up efforts to strengthen large language model security, TechCrunch reported on March 9 local time. The specific terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Promptfoo was founded in 2024 and has developed technology to protect large language models. OpenAI plans to integrate Promptfoo’s technology into its AI agent platform, OpenAI Frontier. It plans to strengthen automated security checks for AI agents, workflow security assessments, risk monitoring and regulatory compliance features.

OpenAI appears to be seeking to strengthen security frameworks so companies can use AI agents safely through the acquisition. Promptfoo provides an open-source interface and libraries that can test LLM security vulnerabilities, and more than 25 percent of Fortune 500 companies use the technology, TechCrunch reported.

Promptfoo has raised $23 million since its founding, and its valuation was assessed at $86 million as of July 2025.
