NIA to support overseas expansion of Korean open RAN with parallel Korea-Japan trials
Korea\'s National Information Society Agency will run a demonstration project to support overseas expansion by domestic open RAN companies, it said on Tuesday. The project will build and verify open RAN infrastructure and AI services in parallel at SL Electronics\' plant in Korea and STL Japan\'s logistics center in Japan. The trials will use LG Electronics\' O-DU and O-RU radio equipment from Wave Electronics, Gigalane and Samji Electronics, combined with AI services as a package.

IITP to boost full-stack linking AI semiconductors and physical AI to respond to AX 2.0
South Korea\'s Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) is strengthening full-stack competitiveness by linking AI semiconductors, physical AI and next-generation networks, it said. It aims to respond to the spread of agentic AI and physical AI in industrial sites in the AX 2.0 era. IITP outlined R&D and talent development plans, including support for AI semiconductor firms, 6G and satellite communications, cybersecurity initiatives, defence AX programmes and expanded AI training.

South Korea\'s top three mobile carriers\' R&D spending share led by SKT, followed by KT and LG Uplus
R&D spending as a share of sales at South Korea’s three mobile carriers in 2025 was highest at SK Telecom, followed by KT and LG Uplus, a filing showed. SKT’s share fell from a year earlier despite the largest outlay. KT sharply increased R&D spending, narrowing the gap with SKT. LG Uplus remained the only one below 1 percent. The firms focused R&D on AI and network upgrades, and differed in how they accounted for R&D costs.
