Broadcast media, telecom deliberation committee elects Ko Gwang-heon as chair nominee
South Korea’s Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Deliberation Committee held its first regular meeting on March 12 and chose Ko Gwang-heon as chair nominee and Kim Min-jung as vice chair. The panel will move to form an Election Broadcasting Deliberation Committee for the June 3 local elections after a delay of more than a month. It also aims to restart broadcast and telecommunications deliberations halted for nine months, with about 207,000 cases pending.

Yoon Suk Yeol sentenced to life in prison as court finds insurrection over martial law
Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to life in prison at first instance on charges of being the ringleader of an insurrection linked to the Dec. 3 martial law episode. The court said it was hard to deny he intended to block and paralyse parliamentary activity by sending troops to seal the National Assembly and arrest key figures. It also cited sentencing factors including planning and social costs.

Credit union federation to pick new chief on Jan. 7 amid sweeping crisis
The Korea Federation of Credit Cooperatives will elect a new chairman on Jan. 7 as it grapples with surging delinquencies and a large net loss. Five candidates are running in the first multi-candidate race since direct elections were introduced. The federation’s assets rose to 156.8 trillion won, while liabilities climbed to 147.4 trillion won. Candidates pledge measures to restore soundness and bolster competitiveness, including digital initiatives and new business plans.
