Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission to scrutinise carrier incentives to curb steering to high-priced plans

South Korea\'s Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission will strengthen its response to unfair sales practices after the abolition of the Mobile Device Distribution Act. From next month, it will monitor how the three mobile carriers pay incentives to agencies and retailers, and will focus inspections on practices that force or induce customers to sign up for high-priced plans or add-on services. It will also strengthen plan-change alerts, improve comparisons of extra subsidies and expand user reporting mechanisms.

Korean mobile carriers support Nepal flood recovery by waiving roaming fees for aid workers

South Korea\'s telecommunications industry is introducing fee-reduction measures for personnel dispatched to help restore damage from recent large-scale floods in Nepal. SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus will fully waive roaming charges for emergency relief teams, NGOs and medical staff working at disaster sites in Nepal. They will also cut by 50 percent international call rates from South Korea to Nepal numbers. The measures run from Aug. 21 to Sept. 20.

MSIT official seeks to broaden basic communications rights so KakaoTalk and maps do not cut out

A South Korean science ministry official said basic data services should not become unusable in the AI era. The Ministry of Science and ICT in April announced a plan to apply a data safety option to all LTE and 5G data plans of the three mobile carriers without separate price increases and to expand voice and text allowances for users aged 65 and older. The plan also includes simplifying plan lineups and preparing 5G plans in the 20,000 won range.
