MSIT to double support for field deployment of disaster response tech next year with 5.1 billion won

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT plans to roughly double next year\'s budget for applying disaster and accident response technologies in the field. The ministry said it will solicit new projects for 2027 under its EXPERT programme, with a proposed budget of 5.1 billion won. The programme supports field verification and commercialisation of safety technologies. New projects will be pursued in three types, including tech linkage, new-tech application and building an AI-based matching platform.

MSIT minister steps in amid questions over Korean AI foundation model project, two-track push with frontier AI

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT moved to calm growing talk that the domestically developed AI foundation model project known as Dokpamo could be halted. Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said the project would continue and that the government should also challenge frontier AI. The ministry said nothing had been decided on halting Dokpamo or forming a special-purpose company. Industry figures said the boundary between Dokpamo and frontier AI remains unclear.

MSIT holds awards ceremony for AI-XR developer contest; 32 teams win

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT held an awards ceremony on Sept. 30 for the 2026 AI and extended reality service developer contest at the Virtual Convergence Industry Hub in Pangyo, Seongnam. A total of 497 teams and 1,029 participants took part. The contest was run in developer and creator divisions. After document, presentation and final evaluations, 32 teams and 84 people won awards. MSIT said it will provide follow-up support including internships and startup consulting.
