Will phone activation face authentication land softly despite opt-out concerns?
South Korea’s science ministry is introducing face authentication in the mobile phone sign-up process from July 6 across major carriers and budget operators, while allowing users to choose alternative verification from the start. The ministry said the opt-out reflects recommendations from privacy and human rights bodies, but it plans to monitor dealers to prevent intentional bypassing. National AI strategy committee says telecoms investment in infrastructure essential for AI top-three push
South Korea’s National AI Strategy Committee said the telecommunications industry must actively invest in key infrastructure such as GPUs, NPUs and AI data centres to help the country become one of the world’s top three AI powers. The Korea Telecommunications Operators Association held its 10th AI Future Value Forum in Seoul to review progress on the government’s AI action plan and discuss its impact on telecoms. Officials also cited plans to improve data-use regulations and create an AI-friendly regulatory environment.

MSIT to unify claims window for power bill compensation for apartment internet equipment
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT will integrate the application channel for compensation related to shared electricity bills used by internet distribution equipment installed in multi-unit housing such as apartments and villas. From June 15, it will operate a compensation application management system with industry groups to manage applications and processing status in one place. A dedicated centre will provide guidance and support, while authorities continue a nationwide survey and monthly checks through a task force.
