South Korea tightens illegal spam blocking with system revamp and AI push
South Korea is stepping up efforts to prevent damage from illegal spam by expanding pre-emptive blocking of invalid numbers and strengthening sender verification, aiming to stop spam at the sending stage. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Communications Commission held a joint public-private meeting in Seoul on April 14 with related agencies and industry participants. Measures include improvements to block overseas spam, tighter identity checks for bulk senders and an AI-based joint response platform.

KTOA holds 8th AI future value forum, looks at government policy roadmap
The Korea Telecommunications Operators Association said its AI Future Value Forum held its eighth meeting on Feb. 24 at KTOA’s Cellas Hall in Seoul. The forum focused on the implementation of the AI Basic Act and this year’s government AI policy direction. A science ministry official shared key strategies including launching governance centered on an AI deputy prime minister, releasing a Korean AI foundation model and securing 37,000 GPUs. Participants also discussed telecom operators’ roles in national AX.

KT number porting system outage enters second day, customers face disruption
A system failure affecting processing for customers seeking to move their numbers from KT to other carriers continued for a second day, causing ongoing disruption. Industry officials said multiple errors occurred in transfers to SK Telecom and LG Uplus after activations began at 10 a.m. KTOA temporarily streamlined consent checks to reduce delays. KT denied intentional disruption. Outbound KT customers totalled 79,055 over six days through Jan. 5.
