Broadcasting Media Communications Committee releases 2024 broadcast assessment; KBS1, MBN top scores by platform
South Korea\'s Broadcasting Media Communications Committee approved the 2024 broadcast assessment results for 371 stations operated by 153 broadcasters at a plenary meeting on July 22. The results will be reflected in broadcaster re-licensing and re-approval reviews. KBS1 recorded the highest score among national terrestrial TV channels, while MBN ranked top among comprehensive programming channel operators. The committee also approved the 2025 assessment basic plan and will disclose detailed results on its website.

Cable TV urges relief from broadcast development fund burden as local public infrastructure in \'five poles, three specials\' era
South Korea\'s cable TV system operators urged the government to ease their broadcast development fund burden, stressing local channels\' role as public infrastructure. At a seminar at the National Assembly on June 30, speakers said local channels provide closely targeted reporting, election coverage and disaster broadcasting. Researchers presented a hyperlocal media index and said cable channels in South Gyeongsang and Ulsan outperformed terrestrial and private broadcasters in local coverage. Regulators said more discussion is needed.

Kim Jong-cheol says private broadcasters are backbone of democracy, vows more production support
Kim Jong-cheol (김종철), chairman of the Broadcasting Media and Communications Commission, said on April 17 that private broadcasters have recorded local lives and served as a backbone protecting democratic values. Speaking at the 2026 Korea Private Broadcasting Day ceremony in Ulsan, he also met executives from nine private broadcasters including SBS, KNN, TBC and TBJ to discuss regulatory and policy issues for local broadcasting and to hear industry requests and difficulties.
