JCB partners with Circle to test stablecoin payments in Japan
JCB is partnering with Circle to examine the feasibility of cross-border payments using USDC and its potential use at merchants in Japan. The companies will first explore using USDC for internal cross-border fund transfers through a proof of concept. They will also pursue stablecoin payments at local merchants by overseas visitors to Japan and review technology supporting interoperability across multiple blockchain networks. They did not disclose a commercialization timeline.

AI era brings focus on yen stablecoins as Japan weighs strategy
Japan is increasingly debating the need for yen-denominated stablecoins and related rules as AI agents begin to make autonomous payments. At WebX 2026, Takafumi Horie and JPYC CEO Noritaka Okabe discussed payment infrastructure, security design and legal frameworks. They argued currency choice could be a competitive edge, citing stability and accounting and tax needs. They also pointed to Japan’s crypto tax burden and the importance of AI-friendly regulation.

Lawson to test stablecoin payments at convenience stores with JPYC from August
Japan\'s convenience store chain Lawson will introduce payments using yen-pegged stablecoin JPYC at stores from August. A pilot is set for early August at a Lawson store operated by telecoms company KDDI, using a smartphone wallet barcode scanned by a POS terminal. Lawson plans to check POS integration and payment time. KDDI has a capital and business tie-up with wallet firm HashPort, which supports the trial.
