AI Strategy Committee shifts to project-based work, steps up AIDC, defence AX, AI security and standardisation

South Korea\'s National AI Strategy Committee set a goal for its second year of positioning the country as an irreplaceable core player in the global AI supply chain and a trusted partner. It plans to pursue tasks including national strategic industrialisation of AI data centres, industry and defence AX, and AI security and standardisation, while shifting its operations from subcommittee-led work to project-based execution. It also aims to focus on implementation and performance management as the cross-government AI budget rises.

Jaeheon Jung (정재헌) says SKT must cut reliance on foreign AI with Korean-optimised \'AI for Everyone\'

SK Telecom CEO Jaeheon Jung said the company aims to reduce reliance on foreign AI through its \'AI for Everyone\' initiative and deliver services optimised for the Korean language and culture. He said models must learn local language, lifestyles and culture to provide proper services. Jung cited uncertainty over policy changes and possible fee hikes by foreign AI providers. SKT plans an AI agent service beyond chatbots, with phone and text functions, starting a beta after early October and launching within the year.

SKT and Upstage to develop security-focused AI foundation model

SK Telecom will work with Upstage and major domestic AI and security companies to develop an AI foundation model specialised in cybersecurity. SKT said it submitted an application on Aug. 27 to join a government-backed project led by the Ministry of Science and ICT. SKT will lead the consortium and develop the model with Upstage, using their existing A.X K and Solar Open model families and validating performance with operational data.
