Microsoft steps up AI startup acquisitions as it seeks OpenAI alternatives

Microsoft is pursuing acquisitions of AI startups, Reuters reported on May 13. The move aims to prepare an independent path that does not rely on longtime partner OpenAI, Reuters said, citing five sources familiar with the matter. Reuters reported Microsoft wants to secure AI talent through the acquisitions and develop its own state-of-the-art AI models by next year. It previously considered buying Cursor but dropped the plan over internal regulatory concerns.
