ELS fines cut to 600 billion won after local elections, financial policy in focus
With the June 3 local elections over, attention in South Korea’s financial sector is shifting back to financial authorities and the National Assembly. Issues that lost traction during the campaign, including governance reform at financial holding firms, digital asset regulation, loan rules for non-resident single-homeowners and a compensation liability system for voice phishing, may return to the agenda in the second half. Regulators have also adjusted ELS sanctions and stepped up work on consumer protection and AI security threats.

Shinhan Bank builds financial partnership with Hoseo University
Shinhan Bank will act as a key financial partner for Hoseo University, providing financial services needed to run the school and strengthening tailored support for students and faculty. The bank said it signed a memorandum of understanding with the university on June 1 at Hoseo University\'s Asan campus in Asan, South Chungcheong Province. Under the agreement, the bank will also support issuing student IDs that double as debit cards.

IPTV content fee payment rate stuck in high 20s, below other industries
IPTV operators’ payment rate for broadcast content programme fees has become fixed in the high 20 percent range and remains significantly lower than other content industries, an analysis showed. Lee Sung-min (이성민), a professor at Korea National Open University, presented the findings at a Korea Broadcast Association seminar on Tuesday. He said IPTV’s rate was 28.7 percent in 2024, compared with 72.6 percent for cable operators’ basic channels.
