Vice PM Bae holds talks in Belgium with EU on AI, science and technology cooperation
South Korea\'s Vice Prime Minister Bae Kyeong-hoon (배경훈) met a European Union executive commissioner in Brussels to discuss ways to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence and science and technology, the science ministry said. He accompanied President Lee Jae-myung on a state visit to Belgium and the EU. Bae also met Korean researchers at IMEC and discussed Horizon Europe participation, joint research in AI-driven innovation, advanced biotech and quantum technology, and wider researcher exchanges.

EU unveils tech sovereignty package targeting U.S., China big tech, declares self-reliance in chips, AI and cloud
The European Union has unveiled a new regulatory package aimed at increasing self-reliance in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and cloud services. The plan seeks to reduce dependence on U.S. and Chinese technology firms and bring control of key digital infrastructure inside Europe. It focuses on critical infrastructure such as hospitals, energy networks and public services, and requires approval by the EU’s 27 member states to take effect.

EU mulls tougher cloud procurement rules, raising possibility of excluding U.S. providers
The European Union is pushing to introduce stricter cloud service standards that could allow it to exclude Amazon, Microsoft and Google from key public tenders, Reuters reported. The move is set to be included in an upcoming Cloud and AI Development Act package. The European Commission plans to mandate digital sovereignty requirements for procurement in sensitive sectors and add use of EU-made software and hardware as a required evaluation item alongside price.
