Ford to launch sub-$30,000 electric pickup Fathom in 2027, take on Tesla
Ford unveils the name, pricing and launch schedule for its next-generation electric pickup, the Fathom, with a $28,350 base price and a starting price of $29,945 including shipping. Automakers expand subscription-based self-driving features
Automakers are rapidly expanding monthly subscription sales of driver-assistance features to generate recurring software revenue after vehicle delivery. Ford aims to put Level 3 autonomous driving in affordable EVs by 2028
Ford said it will introduce Level 3 autonomous driving that requires no driver intervention on affordable electric vehicles by 2028. It plans to build necessary hardware into a next-generation affordable EV platform due in 2027, then commercialise the Level 3 function via software updates in 2028. The strategy targets Tesla and Waymo, but faces scepticism over a timeline lagging rivals and limits similar to Ford’s mapped-highway BlueCruise system.
