OpenAI co-founder says AI use gap widens as only a few feel frontier model performance

OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy said a widening gap is emerging between the public and frontline AI users, with only a small minority experiencing the performance of frontier models. He estimated about 6 billion people have not used large language models, while most of the remaining users only occasionally use free versions of services such as ChatGPT. He put the number of people using cutting-edge models for coding at about 20 million, and those with internal access to frontier systems at about 5,000.

Subscription- and ad-free local AI assistant Underdog launches, revenue to come from payment fees

Conway Research has launched an invite-only beta of its on-device AI assistant, Underdog. The service currently runs fully on Mac and Windows 11 PCs, with Linux, iPhone and Android versions in the works. It focuses on privacy by encrypting account keys and running AI inference on the device using its Husky engine. The company plans to keep the assistant free and ad-free, and seek revenue from small fees tied to transactions handled through Stripe.

Anthropic CEO says AI could dominate internet within a year, draws backing from Big Tech

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei (다리오 아모데이) said AI development should slow, citing a recent OpenAI agent jailbreak hacking incident. In a blog post, he wrote he worries that, given accelerating capabilities, such systems could take over the entire internet within 6 to 12 months. He proposed a three-step deceleration plan that includes placing independent safety evaluators inside frontier AI firms with employee-level access. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX AI CEO Elon Musk expressed support.
