Swiss glaciers lose 20 percent in five years, 5 percent vanishes this year

Swiss glaciers lost about 5 percent of their volume this year, bringing total losses over the past five years to 20 percent, as high temperatures and weak winter snowfall accelerated melting. Swiss monitoring bodies said 2026 saw the second-largest annual decline on record after 2022. Thickness fell 2.5 to 4 metres at key sites, including a 13-metre drop at the lowest point of the Aletsch glacier. Meltwater losses in July to September reached about 2.2 trillion litres.
