Alibaba Cloud launches third data centre in South Korea to target enterprise agentic AI market
Alibaba Cloud said on Aug. 18 it has officially opened its third data centre in South Korea as it targets the AI market. The company said it will continue long-term investment in Korea, which it views as a key AI and digital market in Asia. It plans to strengthen local infrastructure and support stable operations of AI and cloud-based services. Alibaba Cloud also plans to expand agent-based AI services for growing enterprise demand.

Most-liked AI models differ from most-downloaded, with smaller models preferred in real-world use
A wide gap has emerged between the latest, very large AI models that draw the most attention and the models most used in actual development, according to a comparison by Hugging Face. Only 1 model appeared on both the top 25 most-downloaded list and the top 25 most-liked list. Downloads were dominated by smaller models, while very large models accounted for only a small share. Older models also continued to lead usage.

Kakao language model Kanana-2 outperforms overseas models in safety assessment
Kakao has disclosed numerical safety verification results for its self-developed lightweight language models. The company said on Aug. 18 that two open-source models in its Kanana-2 series scored higher than major global models of similar size on assessments of harmfulness and bias, confirming top-tier safety. The evaluation used AssurAI, a Korea-designed safety benchmark, and compared the models with Google’s Gemma and Alibaba’s Qwen.
