AI startups face scrutiny over inflated annual recurring revenue figures

A practice in which AI startups promote annual recurring revenue figures higher than their actual sales has come under scrutiny. Scott Stevenson, co-founder and CEO of legal AI startup Spellbook, said many AI startups appear to set revenue records by using dishonest metrics. He cited cases where companies report third-year contract pricing as ARR despite receiving first-year payments, even when customers can opt out after 12 months.
