[DigitalToday intern reporter Seung-a Yoo] U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) software development platform company Replit has effectively switched the default model partner for its AI coding platform from Anthropic to OpenAI.

Tech outlet TechCrunch reported on Oct. 17 that Replit co-founder and CEO Amjad Masad (암자드 마사드) said on the TechCrunch Disrupt stage that Replit is no longer working with Anthropic.

After the event, Masad said customers can still choose Anthropic models on the platform and only the default model has changed to OpenAI's ChatGPT. As most users keep the default setting, the change could affect Replit's Anthropic-related spending.

Replit has operated its platform using Anthropic's Claude model. The cooperation between the two companies is known to have contributed to Replit's revenue growth, and Masad said Replit was until recently one of Anthropic's top 5 customers. Replit also announced a partnership with OpenAI in August.

Masad cited cost, performance and partnership as reasons for the switch. "I think ChatGPT is better right now," he said, adding that the company evaluates performance with internal benchmarks. He said Sol and Astra delivered better results on public benchmarks in tasks that build a vibe coding application from scratch, and called it a decision that considered cost, partnership and performance.

People familiar with the companies' relationship differed with Masad's onstage remarks. One person, who asked not to be identified, said the partnership remains in place. Replit had introduced Anthropic products on its website, blog and social media until several weeks ago. A blog post in late September said Replit uses Anthropic models in the operating environment of Replit Agent, and around the same time a Replit product manager also introduced examples and features using Anthropic's main model on X, formerly Twitter.

Masad stressed that Replit is not dependent on any specific model and that users can choose supported models, including Claude. He said Replit came to prefer OpenAI as the default model partner for Replit Agent after considering performance, cost efficiency and partnership.

Replit also said revenue contribution from enterprise customers is rising. Masad said the enterprise share of revenue rose to about 15 percent this year from about 2 percent last year, and more than half of total revenue comes from business-to-business (B2B) transactions. He said Replit has not disclosed annual recurring revenue (ARR) yet, but expects enterprise and government customers to account for more than half of total revenue in 2027.

He also stressed the importance of securing AI safety. Masad said AI agents need orchestration, error recovery, safety and security, sandboxing, networking, and identity verification and authorization systems to function properly, adding that building such an execution environment is needed to deploy AI safely.
