South Korea to expand physical AI with AI-RAN; manufacturing trials to start in earnest

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT is applying intelligent base stations, known as AI-RAN, to shipbuilding, petrochemicals and automotive manufacturing sites to test physical AI services. The ministry visited HD Hyundai Samho\'s shipyard in Yeongam to inspect trials under its high-performance AI network programme. KT and SK Telecom-led consortia were selected to build high-performance AI networks at industrial sites and test AI robots and services.

ETRI to map out next 50 years with AI and DX, focus on national strategic technologies

South Korea\'s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) will unveil a new AI-centred research and development vision and a national AI innovation strategy as it marks its 50th anniversary. ETRI said it will hold ETRI Conference 2026 on Sept. 1 in Seoul to review 50 years of ICT achievements and present R&D directions for an era of AI transformation. It also plans to concentrate on five priority fields including AI and physical AI.

KTOA says AI security and safety are a matter of survival, stresses public-private governance

The Korea Telecommunications Operators Association (KTOA) held its 11th AI Future Value Forum in Seoul on Wednesday under the theme of AI security and model safety. Participants reviewed security threats and AI safety issues that could emerge in the frontier AI era and discussed telecom industry response systems and policy tasks to build a trusted AI ecosystem. Speakers presented technical and standards-based measures, while panellists stressed the need for stronger public-private governance.
