SKT steps up push to build AI highway as CDMA turns 30
SK Telecom is stepping up efforts to spread new communications technology beyond the 30th anniversary of CDMA commercialisation. It is accelerating construction of an \"AI highway\" while planning to complete the introduction of 5G standalone mode this year. The CDMA rollout helped spur South Korea\'s mobile market, with subscribers topping 10,000,000 in 1998 and the ICT industry\'s value-added share of GDP rising to 13.1 percent in 2025.

Global telecom equipment makers are intensifying competition in AI network technology as 5G standalone (SA) deployment gains momentum. The shift is seen as key infrastructure for handling growing AI-driven uplink traffic with lower latency and advanced features such as network slicing. South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT has mandated SA conversion as part of spectrum reallocation conditions, opening a new market for vendors. Ericsson, Nokia and Huawei are advancing AI-RAN, cloud RAN and autonomous network solutions.

MSIT holds kickoff meeting for 5G SA task force
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT held a kickoff meeting on Feb. 26 for a task force to promote 5G standalone mode (SA), with participants from industry, academia and research. The ministry said it has set the spread of 5G SA in 2026 as a key mobile task and made the shift mandatory under spectrum reallocation conditions. The task force will support stable migration without service disruptions and promote new services based on SA.
