Amazon to cut 16,000 jobs, slim organisation and focus AI investment

Amazon is launching another large-scale round of layoffs, targeting about 16,000 full-time employees, CNBC reported on Jan. 28. It is the second mass layoff in 16 months. The company said the move is meant to strengthen an anti-bureaucracy stance and focus investment in AI. Amazon previously cut 14,000 jobs in October last year and signalled further reductions. An HR executive said this is not a sign of regular restructuring.

Snap sets up 'Specs' subsidiary to lead AR glasses development

Snap has established a subsidiary called Specs that will exclusively handle development of augmented reality glasses, as it seeks to accelerate commercialisation of its next-generation device. CNBC reported on Jan. 28 that Snap aims to improve operating efficiency for its AR glasses through the unit and is keeping open the possibility of securing outside partners and attracting investment. Specs is hiring more than 100 people and plans to launch sixth-generation AR glasses in 2026.

Google adds slew of Gemini AI features to Chrome browser

Google is adding a wide range of Gemini AI features to the Chrome browser, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 28. The company is placing the Gemini chatbot permanently in the browser’s right-side panel so users can get AI support while browsing. The update includes an image-generation tool called Nano Banana, a personalization feature called Personal Intelligence and an AI agent called Auto Browse for carrying out tasks with a single command.
