Kim Jong-cheol (김종철), chairman of the Broadcasting Media and Communications Commission, visited program production sites at four general programming channels, including JTBC, TV Chosun, Channel A and MBN, on Feb. 26 and exchanged views with on-site staff.
Kim, who began a “relay visit to broadcasting production sites” last month, listened to producers, writers, camera operators and editing staff on competition with global online video services and YouTube, changes in the production environment following the introduction of AI, and difficulties securing facilities, equipment and personnel. On calls to improve working conditions for non-regular workers, he promised active policy support.
At a subsequent meeting with executives, participants discussed easing asymmetric rules on advertising, scheduling and review, as well as ways to improve institutions such as the conditions attached to broadcasters’ re-approval.
Kim said he would also consider at the government level what needs to be improved industrially to create a production environment suited to the characteristics of general programming channels. He urged broadcasters to make efforts as members of the media ecosystem so they can also play a role as a forward base for K-content.
