A poll showed more than 6 in 10 Americans see profits from the cryptocurrency businesses of U.S. President Donald Trump’s family as improper. A large majority also said the president’s personal business interests are influencing policy decisions.

CoinPost, a blockchain media outlet, reported on Aug. 21 that an online Reuters-Ipsos survey of 1,166 U.S. adults conducted from Aug. 14 to 17 found 63 percent said the Trump family was improperly profiting from crypto businesses. Another 32 percent said it was appropriate.

Concern was also high about links between the president’s personal business and policy decisions. Some 69 percent of respondents said Trump’s personal business interests, including crypto, were influencing policy decisions.

Perceptions differed sharply by party. Among Republican supporters, about 70 percent said the Trump family’s crypto profits were appropriate, while negative views dominated among independents and Democratic supporters.

Views also diverged on whether personal business affects policy decisions. About half of Republican supporters said there was an influence, compared with about two-thirds of independents and about 90 percent of Democratic supporters.

The controversy is also linked to asset disclosures Trump has made public. In a 2025 financial disclosure report released around June 30, Trump reported more than $1.4 billion in income from crypto-related businesses. That accounts for a significant part of total income of about $2.2 billion over the same period.

Breaking it down, Trump’s meme coin generated about $635 million in income through licensing and other arrangements, according to the tally. The token was issued ahead of the inauguration, but its price later fell sharply.

World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a crypto project established by the Trump family, was tallied at about $500 million to $800 million in income mainly from token sales. A related entity is known to be structured to receive 75 percent of the sales proceeds.

Income from Melania Trump’s meme coin was about $6 million, relatively small. All of the figures are revenue before costs are deducted. The disclosure did not specify net profit, and media estimates vary depending on how the figures are calculated.

A separate estimate also emerged over the scale of crypto-related gains the Trump family actually secured. A Reuters tally estimated profits from the Trump family’s main crypto businesses have reached at least $2.3 billion since Trump took office. That is similar to the estimated losses suffered by token buyers.

Trump’s side denies allegations of conflicts of interest. Trump said that since returning he has not been involved in the day-to-day operation of the family businesses and that his assets are managed by an independent body. The White House also said there is no conflict of interest because the president’s assets are entrusted to an independent financial institution.

Criticism over ethics issues continues. Richard Painter, who served as chief ethics lawyer under former President George W. Bush, said the degree to which business and politics overlap in the current administration is on a scale that was hard to find in the past.

The survey results show the Trump family’s crypto business is expanding beyond a personal venture into concerns over the president’s conflicts of interest, the independence of policy decisions and trust in the crypto market. If Trump’s crypto-related business and policy moves continue to intersect, ethical controversy in politics is expected to continue.
